Shaimaa Magued: Challenging the Naturalized Paradigms of Political Development: The Case of the National Association for Change in Egypt

Abstract: After the eruption of the January Uprising in Tunisia, a wave of change spread in many countries of the region and a new perspective of political development emerged marking a rupture with the mainstream approaches in political development. The modern approach dominating scholarly writings was unable to consider the region's sociopolitical realities and presented a linear model of political development based on top-down homogenizing and repressive policies breeding on modernity and nationalism to ensure masses' allegiance to the ruling elite as the sole symbol of state survival. By looking into the Egyptian case, this study aims to understand how public protests constitute a turning point in the political development theories by highlighting a bottom-up process of political change.
